Not quite perfect, By

I thought this was almost just the thing I was looking for: A pen format mouse without the need for a cumbersome tablet. It works well out of the box without installation of software. However, if you want to have pen mouse sensitivity different than your regular mouse, you’ll need to install the driver software. With the driver software you can change between 400, 800 and 1200 DPI. (That’s the only real functionality you get with the software, which in Windows 7 installs a 6.5 MB footprint at C:\Genius, and shows up in Add/Remove programs as PenMouse with publisher as ‘KYE’.) With the Windows 7 tablet drivers this pen can somewhat be used for handwriting recognition too; HOWEVER, it’ not practical: Every time you set the pen down you need to click and hold for a few milliseconds then you can write a character. Every time you lift the tip you need to click and wait. Sadly an unexpectedly, I can write much easier and faster with my regular optical mouse. I tried a number of settings changes and could not figure out a way to improve the situation. Perhaps there are 3rd-party tablet drivers that would make handwriting work properly. As a pen-format mouse to be used only as a mouse, this is a five-star product. As a drawing pen, this is a three-star product (Works fine, but it’s a bit quirky, particularly given the delay before drawing can begin). As a writing pen, this is a no-star product (I’d love to hear if you have ideas on drivers that could make this work practically).

With a traditional mouse, my hand was always fatigued from too much mousing, particularly all the button clicking. By the end of the work week, I felt crippled and didn’t want to touch the computer all weekend. This pen mouse saved my hand. I’ve been using it for about a month, and I noticed a difference the first week. It has taken some time to get used to, but I’m getting the hang of it. Pressing down on the mouse to left-click is less tiring than clicking with a finger. Two drawbacks are: 1) the mouse goes to sleep when you’re not using it, and it takes a second to wake up. Not a big deal, just different than a normal mouse that is always ready to go. 2) you have to pick up the pen to use it rather than just putting your hand on top of the mouse. Again, not a big deal; I’ve gotten used to this. The learning curve has been frustrating at times, but getting rid of the discomfort has been worth it!! |
